Description

Rye Signal Box was built in 1894 for the South Eastern Railway by contractors Saxby & Farmer, and it is an example of their Type 12 signal box.

The building features a lower floor made of brown brick in Flemish bond with a projecting plinth, while the first floor is timber-framed and clad in weatherboarding. It has a gabled slate roof and a wooden staircase. The signal box is two storeys high, with the operating floor above the locking floor. It measures four bays long and three bays wide, with a staircase located at the north-west end. A later 20th-century toilet extension has been added to the rear, but this is not of special interest.

On the exterior, the south-east side facing the track has four six-pane windows in the operating room and an access balcony supported by decorative cast iron brackets. The cambered window of the locking room remains intact. The north-west end features a straight flight wooden staircase leading up to the operating room, with the gable end displaying carved bargeboards. This end also has two four-pane windows, a half-glazed door, and a small later porch, which is not of special interest. The locking room includes a panelled door, while the south-west end has similar bargeboards, three four-pane windows, and a continuation of the access balcony.

Inside, the operating room retains 14 levers from the original 1888 Duplex lever frame, and the locking room still has the base of the frame. The modern panel installed is not of special interest.
