Description

This is a former furnace, now comprising three 17th and 18th century cottages known as Ashburnham Furnace (Pay Cottage). The main part of the building, incorporating the north-east and central cottages, is timber-framed. An 18th-century addition, serving as the south-west cottage, was added later. The entire structure is faced with red brick with grey headers on the ground floor and tile hanging above. It has a tiled roof. Casement windows feature diamond-shaped leaded lights. The building is two storeys high and has four windows. The 18th-century addition has a half-hipped gable end with an attic window and a doorway sheltered by a flat hood supported on brackets. This furnace was the last in Sussex to smelt iron, remaining operational as late as 1825, although most other Sussex furnaces had ceased working around 50 years prior.
