Description

Gatekeeper's Cottage is a former level crossing keeper's cottage, marked on the Ordnance Survey map as The Gate House. It was built around 1850 for the South Eastern and Chatham Railway and is designed in an Italianate style. The cottage features painted brick with a stone plinth and painted stone quoins and dressings. It has a shallow pitched Welsh slate roof with overhanging eaves and a tall central chimneystack. The building has a T-plan layout, including a small lower-roofed room at the rear, which may have served as an office or store. There is a 20th-century flat-roofed brick extension in the north-west corner, and the cottage is single storey throughout.

The east elevation has an off-centre four-panel door with a lean-to slate hood that extends from the roof, supported by curved wooden brackets. To the left of the door, there is a single light round-headed window with a 20th-century casement, followed by another similar window. To the right, there is a smaller round-headed window. The south elevation features a gable end wall on the right, which slightly projects forward and has a moulded cornice. This wall contains coupled round-headed windows with moulded arches and imposts, featuring 19th-century plain sashes. There is also a single round-headed window with a fixed light on the return wall. Set back to the left are coupled round-headed windows with casements, and further left is a single round-headed window with a fixed light.
