Description
This is a house located at 2 Landgate Square, dating from the 16th century or earlier. It features a timber-framed structure that has been refaced in painted brick on the ground floor and plastered above. The building has two storeys and attics, with a right side projecting half hipped gable that extends through all floors. The gable includes one 20th-century casement window on each floor, along with three small two-light wooden mullioned windows on the first floor. The left side of the house has a six-fielded panelled door, with the top two panels glazed, and a flat hood supported by brackets. The rear elevation displays a tile-hung gable and a massive external yellow brick chimney stack from the 17th century, topped with red brick and featuring four truncated circular flues. Inside, the house has a well-crafted frame and an inglenook fireplace. This property forms the western bay and cross wing of a larger house that originally included No. 1, which is referenced in the Rape of Hastings Architectural Survey No. 953. The house is also depicted in a drawing from 1633 by Sir Anthony Van Dyck.
