Description

This is a house, possibly dating back to the 17th century or earlier, originally a timber-framed building of two bays. In the 20th century, the front of the building was refaced with modern brown brick in English bond and given a plain tiled roof. The house is two storeys high with attics, and has two windows on each floor. There are two modern gabled dormers on the attic level, each with a casement window. The first floor has two triple casement windows, while the ground floor has one double and one triple casement window. A simple doorcase is on the right-hand side. The rear elevation features weatherboarded gables.

Inside, the ground floor contains a 17th-century chamfered spine beam, a likely blocked-in inglenook fireplace, and a stair cupboard with pintle hinges and a 17th-century door featuring two wooden panels. Gunstock jowled corner posts and early 18th-century doors are also present. The attic has 18th-century beams and pegged rafters. A party wall on the first floor, shared with the adjacent property at No. 2, incorporates curved tension braces dating back to the 16th century or earlier. Number 2 originally formed the western bay and crosswing of the original house. The building appears in a drawing of 1633 by Sir Anthony Van Dyck.
