Description
6-8 Tower Street is part of a terrace built around 1800, featuring a 14th-century side wall to number 1, which is adjacent to the Landgate. The retaining wall is made of stone rubble and has blocked trefoil windows above the first floor, along with a round-headed blocked opening with a keystone below it and an ogee arched opening at the plinth. The first floor includes two 20th-century stone mullioned windows. The front of the building is constructed from Flemish brick, topped with a stone parapet that ramps up to the left, and has an old tiled roof with two brick chimneys. The structure is two storeys high and has five windows. Most windows are early 19th-century 12-pane cambered sashes, although number 4 features a 20th-century aluminium front opening casement. The ground floor has a 12-pane sash window for numbers 3 and 5, while numbers 1 and 4 have 20th-century 8-pane shopfronts. Number 2 has a 20th-century replacement sash. Numbers 2 and 3 have paired door cases with cornices and pilasters, with number 3 featuring four flush panels. Number 5 boasts an elaborate doorcase with swags on the frieze and oval paterae, and it retains an iron footscraper. It has a six-panelled door and four steps leading to the street.
