Description
The Barn at the Beeches is a barn dating from the mid to late 17th century. It features a timber frame clad in weatherboarding and has a half-hipped plain tiled roof. The barn has two pairs of full-height doors located on the central bays, which are plain boarded and include a diagonal brace.
Inside, the oak frame consists of three bays supported by jowled posts. These posts hold a tie beam with curved wind braces for each bay. Two simple struts support the purlins and principal trusses, while the truss at the hipped end has high-level bracing in the form of a collar and king post that supports the hip. The wall frames are made from vertical studs with diagonal braces positioned between the wall plate and sill beam. Additionally, the frame is diagonally braced at the corners of the wall plates. An internal platform has been added in the southernmost bay at a later date.
Historically, the barn is depicted on a survey and map from around 1740, which shows the Beechers estate belonging to George Egles, located in the East Sussex County Records Office.
