Description

Dales is a cottage dating from the early to mid 18th century, originally built as part of the commons encroachment. It has been refenestrated within its existing openings in the 20th century and features 19th-century outshots to the north and south. The original structure includes a ground floor made of English garden wall bond and a timber-framed first floor clad in tile-hanging. The roof is tiled and hipped at the south end, with an end chimneystack to the north. The cottage has two and a half bays, which includes a chimney bay to the north and possibly an original outshot to the west. It is two storeys high with two windows, featuring 20th-century oak framed casements within the original oak frames, with a triple window on the ground floor. There is a central heck door and a catslide roof to the rear.

Inside, there is a large open fireplace with a wooden bressumer that originally had a bread oven projecting to the west. The interior also contains a series of battened plank doors with wooden latches, likely original, and exposed floor joists on the ground floor. The first floor frame has some diagonal braces, and the side purlin roof is constructed with roughly quartered timber of small scantling, flat collars, and no ridgepieces. The earliest record of ownership dates back to 1760 in the list of tithepayers, and the cottage is named after its owner in 1838, Edward Dale.
