Description

Hopkin's Crank is an early 19th-century building, originally a two-window, two-storey-and-attic structure with two dormers. It was originally faced with grey headers, now painted, with red brick dressings and quoins. The building has a tiled roof and retains its original glazing bars. A single-storeyed addition at the rear, originally a workshop, was built onto the main structure.

The sculptor and letter-designer Eric Gill lived at Hopkin’s Crank from 1917 to 1924. The ground-floor addition behind the main building served as his workshop. To the southwest of the property is a single-storeyed block, also built by Gill, which now comprises the separate dwellings of "Little Crank" and "Crank's Barn". During his residency, Gill founded the Christian Workers' Guild, which continues to operate and has workshops on Furner's Lane, Burgess Hill. A chapel, built by Gill in 1921 and containing a carved rood, is attached to this block.
