Description

Twyn Cottage and Twyn House are a pair of houses located at 3 and 5 Blatchington Road in Seaford. These buildings date back to the 18th century and were originally constructed using pebbles with brick quoins. In the mid-19th century, they were rendered to resemble masonry, and bay windows were added. The houses feature a hipped tiled roof with two cement-rendered chimney stacks, and they stand two storeys high with attics, comprising five windows in total.

Both houses have three flat-roofed dormers and three mid-19th century canted bays on each floor. Twyn Cottage (No. 3) has an intact two-storey bay with verticals only, horns, a left-side casement, a 19th-century gabled porch, and a plank door. Twyn House (No. 5) has its two bays fitted with 20th-century aluminium windows, along with a central pointed oriel window also made of aluminium. It features an open pedimented porch with a two-centred arch and a four-panelled door, where the top two panels are glazed. The buildings have a plinth, and the rear elevation of No. 5 retains some sliding sash windows.

Inside No. 5, there is 18th-century internal framing made of thin scantling with painted brick infilling, and the staircase has stick balusters and a column newel post. This site was previously home to the medieval leprosy hospital of St John's. Residents of the workhouse that once occupied the buildings were moved to Eastbourne around 1810, after which the buildings returned to domestic use.
