Description

A row of three timber-framed houses at 27–31 The Bourne (odd numbers), dating from the mid to late 15th century. The building comprises two storeys with attics and is four windows wide.

No 29, at the centre, was refaced in the 18th century and is stuccoed with a parapet. It has sash windows with glazing bars.

No 27, to the left, originally had an 18th-century stuccoed front which has since been removed, exposing the timber-framing again. The ground floor has been underbuilt and stuccoed. It now has modern casements.

No 31, to the right, retains its first floor overhanging on the protruding end of the floor joists, supported by curved brackets. The first floor is studded and features a modern canted oriel with cornice. The gable has renewed scalloped bargeboards, a finial, and a pendant. The ground floor has been largely rebuilt in modern timber framing with a modern 4-light window, which was probably once a shop window but is no longer used as such. All windows are modern casements with leaded panes. The letters "HCIS" are now obliterated below the first floor window. The first floor hall of No 31 has a crown-post roof and some later moulded plaster walls.

A passage on the ground floor between Nos 29 and 31 reveals the framing of the north wall of No 29. The backs are plastered.
