Description
St Margaret's is a house of 1911, designed by J.N. Randall-Vining. It was built for a director of Liberty's and retains an outstanding and complete interior reflecting a Liberty's style of interior design. The house is two storeys and attics, with a central section and two projecting wings. The ground floor is constructed of red brick, while the first floor is partly hung with fishscale tiles and partly clad in applied timbering with roughcast infill. The roof is tiled, with clustered chimney stacks. There are two gables with attic windows, and a central four-light dormer. The windows are largely mullioned and transomed casements with leaded lights, including a two-storey bay on the left-hand side. A gabled, tiled weather porch is present. The rear elevation is similar and symmetrical, with two-storey bays featuring 'Ipswich' glazing on the ground floor and a central first-floor window of five lights with mullions and transoms, incorporating an oval window. A wooden porch with square piers is also present.
The interior features an oak-panelled dining room with a baronial-style fireplace and original light fittings. A panelled music room contains Art Nouveau stained glass windows and a decorative metal grille concealing a radiator. The panelled entrance hall has a staircase with a wooden rail and cast iron panels instead of balusters. The stairwell, lounge, and study feature plasterwork and fireplaces in the style of Louis Quinze. A bathroom is decorated with Art Nouveau ceramic tiles in the form of dolphins, and a bedroom contains contemporary wooden built-in cupboards.
