Description
The Temple on Temple Island is an ornamental temple that has been converted into a small house. It was designed in 1771 by James Wyatt. The building is a square structure made of stucco, featuring segmental bays on the north and south sides, and rectangular bay projections on the east and west sides. The main floor is topped with a cornice and blocking course, and above this is a delicate Doric circular temple supported by slender wooden columns, with a frieze, cornice, and a roof covered with a lead saucer dome on a stepped base, topped with a ball and weathercock. The building has two storeys.
On the south side, there are three sash windows with glazing bars, with the central window opening onto a 20th-century wooden landing and a straight flight of steel steps leading to the ground. There is a lower one-storey cottage extension on the north side that is of no special interest. Notably, the original ball and finial decorations on the side projections are now missing, as is a lead statue that was formerly located under the dome. The temple is surrounded by large trees and was strategically placed to serve as a focal point in a landscaped vista from the center of the north front of Fawley Court, although this vista is now largely overgrown.
