Description
Number 42 on High Street is an 18th-century building that was originally two houses. The left side is a two-storey red brick house, while the right side is a three-storey grey brick structure with red dressings and quoins. The facade features three double-hung sash windows within their surrounds. A notable shop front, dating from around 1797, includes two large windows with glazing bars and three doors: the two end doors have traceried fanlights, and the central door has a plain fanlight. The right-hand door has six panels, with four fielded panels and two flush panels. Decorative carved brackets with guttae and paterae support an entablature that features a modillion cornice. The first floor has a shallow splayed bay with a dentil and modillion cornice, and three windows set within architraves. The left side has a moulded wood cornice, while the right side has a brick modillion cornice. A brick band is present on the second floor, and the building has old tiled roofs. Numbers 38 to 43 on High Street form a group with this building.
