Description
The pump houses located to the north of Tangier Mill House were built around 1870 for the former Windsor and Eton Waterworks. They are constructed from red brick and feature a Welsh slate roof with stone-coped pedimented gable ends. The buildings are single-storey and consist of three by five bays, which are highlighted by pilasters and an entablature with cogged brick decoration. There are round arched doorways centrally located on the ends, while the sides have blank round arches in the same position. Round plaques displaying insignia are found in the pediments. Inside, there are two Fourneyrow outward-flow turbines, which were built in 1873 by Stothert and Pitt of Bath, designed by Wm. Henry Cutler. These turbines drive nine double-acting pumps, each developing 42 horsepower, and the installation is thought to be unique.
