Description
The main building at St Mark's Hospital, constructed in 1836 by Cooper and Son, is an early example of a workhouse. It features slate, hipped roofs and is built from stock bricks arranged around two courtyards. The structure consists of long blocks on each side, with end pavilions that are set forward, and a central block that also has a pediment set forward. The building has vertical sliding windows, some of which have glazing bars, and stone cills. The facade of the courtyards is now painted. There is also a later separate block to the north that is designed in a similar style.
