Description
The Canning Tomb, located approximately 9 metres northwest of the tower of the Church of St. Mary, is an early 19th-century chest tomb designed in a Neo-classical style. The top of the tomb features four chamfered faces, with acroteria at each corner and a central urn. The corners are fluted. Surrounding the tomb is a cast iron railed enclosure adorned with arrow heads and shaped standards topped with urn finials. The inscription on the tomb was illegible at the time of resurvey. It is believed that Thomas Canning was the brother of George Canning, who served as foreign secretary and briefly as prime minister in 1827.
