Description

Speen House is a house dating from the 18th century, with significant remodelling in the early 19th century. It has two parallel hipped roofs covered in old tiles, with stacks to the right and left, and further stacks on the ridge behind. The north front has three bays, with a two-storey, one-bay addition to the right. All windows are sash windows with glazing bars. The central bay projects slightly and contains a central door with an early 19th-century bowed porch, constructed of timber and glass, featuring French casements and a fluted frieze with paterae. A coped parapet tops the front. The east front has one bay and a stack to the right, and a two-storey projecting block to the left with a segmental bow rising to a parapet; this block features three large sash windows on each floor, with a raised band at cornice level below the parapet. The south front is two storeys and five bays, with a central, probably mid-19th century, hipped canted bay rising to a parapet. Two bays are blank to the right and two bays to the left, with the ground floor windows cut down. Inside, a ground floor room to the east has a fireplace with attenuated fluted columns, and a good cornice. The principal ground floor room to the south has a fireplace featuring paired attenuated fluted columns and a central Wedgwood plaque. There are other fireplaces and cornices of early 19th-century date in the first floor rooms. A two-storey, three-bay mid-19th century addition to the west is of no particular architectural interest.
