Description
Aldermaston Lock is a lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal, dating from the early 18th century. Originally turf-sided, it was enlarged in the mid-18th century and given scalloped brick walls. In the late 20th century, the walls were raised to the full height of the lock. The brick chamber features scalloped bays with brick coping, and there are concrete uprights between these bays. The lock has two sets of double wooden gates, all equipped with mechanical gate paddle gearing. The lockside surfaces are paved with brick. The Kennet Navigation was established by 1724 and was acquired by the Kennet & Avon Canal Company in 1812, with John Hore as the engineer for the Navigation and John Rennie as the engineer for the Canal. The lock is also a scheduled ancient monument.
