Description
The Old Stable Block, now used as classrooms, dates from the 18th century with additions made around 1858, likely by John Johnson. It is constructed of red brick with a plinth and plat band, topped by an old tile hipped roof featuring six irregularly placed stacks. The south side has four hipped dormers, a central cupola with a tiled base, and a timber arched bellcote topped with an ogival lead finial and weathervane. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a total of nine bays and cross windows.
On the north front, there is a central projecting three-bay block with banded rustication on the first floor. This features a large central arch made with rubbed brick voussoirs and a keystone, flanked by circular windows on the first floor and casement windows on the ground floor, which have extended keystones. A doorway is located in the second bay from the left, while there is a blocked archway in the second bay from the right, complete with stone impost blocks and a keystone. To the right, there is a one-storey block with a coped parapet and two blocked arches, also with stone impost blocks and keystones.
The south front has a slightly projecting central three-bay section, with recessed arches in the second, fifth, and eighth bays, all featuring stone impost blocks, keystones, and arched windows. To the left, there is a one-storey block with a plat band, coped parapet, and two blocked depressed arches with stone impost blocks and keystones. To the right, another one-storey block has a plat band, coped parapet, and two recessed depressed arched panels with stone impost blocks, keystones, and arched glazing bar sashes.
Adjoining the stable block is a wall extending approximately 10 metres long and 4 metres high, built of 18th-century red brick. It features a stone Doric doorcase with a triangular pediment on the left and a recessed arched panel with stone impost blocks and keystones on the right.
