Description

The Church of St John is a church built in 1839, with alterations made by Sir Ninian Comper after 1904. It is constructed of grey vitrified brick with stone dressings and features a slate roof. The church includes a west tower, a three-bay nave, transepts, a chancel, a north-east vestry, and a south porch, all designed in a lancet style. The tower has three stages, a parapet, and corner pinnacles, along with triple lancet openings for the bell chamber and a clock. The windows are set in deep reveals, and the porch is vaulted. The roof has coped verges with kneelers. The east window, designed by Comper, features a depressed arch and panel tracery. Inside, there is a 17th-century Dutch chandelier and several fittings by Comper, including two oak kneeling desks, pews, an alabaster reredos, a Portland stone font, and a wrought iron chancel screen. The south transept has been fitted out by Comper as a memorial chapel, and the east window and other glass are also by Comper. The church is mainly of interest for the Comper fittings.
