Description
Union Castle House, built in 1847 by Alfred Giles, was originally the Custom House and served in that capacity until 1902 when a new Custom House was constructed. The building is two storeys high and made of yellow brick. The elevation facing Canute Road features a 20th-century stone addition, with the central portion being slightly higher. The facade has a window arrangement of three in the center, five in the middle, and three on the ends. It has a hipped tiled roof adorned with a large wooden modillion cornice, and the central section includes a louvred lantern. The windows are sash style, with most of the glazing bars still intact, and the first-floor windows have moulded architraves and cornices above the central windows. The ground floor has a stone projection with a round-headed doorcase, flanked by lights on either side and engaged Tuscan columns that support an entablature featuring a triglyph frieze and urns. The center of the parapet is raised, and the building has end quoins and a plinth.
