Description
Tudor Merchants Hall is a Grade II* listed building located on Westgate Street. Originally built before 1428, this 15th-century structure was restored in 1973-1974. It initially stood in St Michael's Square, where the upper floors served as the town's Woollen Cloth Hall, while the open arcaded ground floor functioned as a Fishmarket. By the 17th century, the building had fallen into disrepair and was sold in 1634 to Alderman Edward Exton for 20 marks, who had it re-erected at its current location as a warehouse, filling in the arcaded ground floor. The building features three storeys and is a five-bay timber-framed structure with plaster infilling on a stone rubble ground floor. It has curved braces supporting the second floor and includes mullioned or mullioned and transomed windows in wooden frames, which are not original. The roof is tiled, and the interior boasts a crown post roof.
