Description
The culvert on Holy Brook, located at the rear of Castle Street from the odd-numbered properties 1 to 31, dates from the late 16th century to the 18th century, with repairs made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It features some carved and moulded stones that may date back to the 11th or 12th centuries. The structure is approximately 160 metres long, averaging 3 metres in width and 1.5 metres in height. The base of the walls is made of dressed stone, supporting brick and stone vaulting that forms a depressed arch.
Moving eastwards, the first section is about 50 metres long and constructed of 18th-century brick, followed by 10 metres of concrete repairs, ending in an arch made of re-used stone with a roll mould. This is followed by approximately 17 metres of brick vaulting that culminates in an arch with a moulded keystone. Next, there is about 18 metres of stone vaulting made from irregular dressed stones, which includes some carved stones with chevron and volute ornaments, possibly from the 11th century, ending in a brick arch made of late 16th-century bricks.
Additionally, there are approximately 15 metres of moulded stone ribbed arches arranged in parallel to form a continuous vault, with the stone ribs being re-used stones likely from the 12th century, totaling 40 ribs. The final section consists of about 8 metres of late 16th-century brickwork forming the vault, with the remainder of the culvert made up of 18th and 19th-century brick vaulting of varying widths, including repairs from the 20th century.
