Description

The Royal Meteorological Society, located at 104 Oxford Road, is a detached house built in the late 18th century or early 19th century, which was converted into offices in the 20th century.

The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring a stone or painted stone portico and cornice, topped with a slate tile roof. The main rear elevation is smooth rendered, and the structure is two storeys tall, possibly with a basement.

The principal southern elevation, facing Oxford Road, presents a symmetrical five-bay composition with classical proportions. The main entrance features a six-panelled door beneath a sunburst fanlight, sheltered by a stone or painted stone Doric portico. Flanking the entrance are two pairs of six-over-six sash windows with gauged brickwork heads and stone cills, and there are five matching sash windows on the first floor. A cornice parapet conceals the lower section of the double-pitched roof. The east elevation facing Eaton Place shows several scars from brickwork repairs, with one six-over-six sash window on the ground floor and a three-over-six sash window in the attic, both featuring stone cills and gauged brickwork jack arch heads. The west elevation has two modern six-over-six sash windows on the ground floor and one on the first floor, along with a six-over-six sash window under a gauged brick jack arch in the attic. The brickwork on the east and west elevations has been built up between the pairs of ridge chimney stacks. The rear elevation is smooth rendered and includes modern sash windows.

Adjoining the north and east elevations is a single-storey extension with a hipped slate roof adorned with brick dentils. This extension features a modern casement window and door on its south elevation, both under gauged brickwork jack arches, while its north elevation has been rebuilt and contains two modern casement windows.

The front garden is paved and enclosed by a brick wall with sections of metal railings. The building was previously listed as Mannson House.
