Description
Shire Hall is a building constructed between 1904 and 1911 by the architects Warwick and Hall, designed in the Queen Anne style. It features a red brick exterior with a Portland stone channelled ground floor and occasional quoins. The building has a painted modillion cornice and a slate roof with a balustraded top and panelled corner chimneys. It stands three storeys high, with an attic and basement, and is five bays wide. The windows are casements with glazing bars, and the second floor has eared architraves. The first floor's central three windows have segmental heads with an open segmental pediment and keys, while the outer windows feature bolection surrounds and keys. A modified Doric projecting portico extends across the ground floor, with a pair of columns in the centre and two more on each side, flanking the entrance steps that lead to a round-headed doorway with niches on either side. Altar-type cast iron lamp standards are positioned on the walls flanking the steps. A wide dormer with a cornice is also present. Inside, there is a groin vaulted hall.
