Description

A row of six terraced houses located on Clifton Terrace, Southsea, built around 1856 and likely designed by Gauntlett. The houses are constructed of stucco and have low-pitched Welsh slate roofs with brick stacks to the right of numbers 2, 3, 4 and 5, and a rendered stack to the right of number 1. The facades are three storeys and a basement, with attics to numbers 1, 2 and 6. There are eleven bays in total, with the outer bays projecting and flanked on the first and second floors by panelled pilasters. The ground floors are rusticated with alternating vermiculated and vertically incised long and short quoins. Number 1 on the left has a tripartite window with a 4-pane central sash and narrow flanking sashes. Number 6 on the right has a two-storey later extension with a 6-panelled door, an overlight, and a 4-pane sash to the first floor, finished with a band cornice and coped parapet. A 4-panelled door is located to the left of numbers 3 and 4, and a 6-panelled door to the left of numbers 4 and 5, each with an overlight. On the first floor, numbers 2 to 5 each have two full-height sashes leading to an ornate cast-iron balcony; the sashes to numbers 2, 4 and 5 are 6-pane, while number 3 has a 12-pane sash, all with architraves and moulded cornices. A moulded band runs along the facade. The first floor of number 1 has a rectangular tripartite oriel window with a 4-pane centre sash and narrow flanking and side sashes, while number 6 has a tripartite canted bay with a 4-pane centre sash and narrow flanking sashes. Each oriel has a frieze cornice and a panelled apron. On the second floor, numbers 1 to 6 each have two sashes; numbers 1 and 5 have 4-pane sashes, and numbers 2, 3 and 6 have 6-pane sashes, all with architraves, cornices and bracketed sills. Elaborate brackets, a moulded cornice, and a parapet with pierced panels complete the exterior. The left return to Clifton Road features a panelled door, a blinded fanlight set under a round arch with a keystone, and flanking pilasters. The interior was not inspected.
