Description
The Old Management School, also known as Building Number 34 of HMS Nelson, is located on Queen Street in Portsmouth. This building dates back to 1847-1848 and was originally part of the Anglesey Barracks, serving as an army barracks canteen before becoming part of the naval barracks. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and features a hipped slate roof with red tile ridges and brick chimneys. The building is two storeys high and consists of 11 bays arranged in a 3:5:3 pattern, with the central section projecting slightly. The two left-hand bays were rebuilt in the mid-20th century. The entrance includes a central part-glazed door with an overlight and a gauged flat brick arch above it. The windows also have similar arches made of bright-red brick, stone sills, and 12-pane sashes set within reveals. The rear of the building mirrors the front in style, with a layout of 2, 6, and 2 bays, featuring a projecting central section with paired windows. The interior has not been inspected. Historically, this building is significant as one of the oldest canteens in an English barracks, which served beer under a franchising system reformed by the army after the Crimean War. The navy took over the barrack buildings in 1899, establishing the first barracks for sailors in Portsmouth. The Old Management School is included as part of a group with the main barracks and HMS Victory.
