Description
The Statue of Queen Victoria, created in 1903 by Alfred Drury, is located in Guildhall Square, Landport, Portsmouth. Originally positioned nearby, it was moved to its current location during the construction of Guildhall Square in 1972. The statue is made of bronze and depicts an aged Queen Victoria, set on a high, four-sided plinth with a cornice and a moulded base made of granite.
The main bronze plaque on the plinth features the inscription 'Victoria Regina et imperatrix 1837 - 1901'. Another plaque at the top of the plinth displays the borough crest, while an additional plaque notes that the statue was 'Erected by public subscription during the Majority of Sir William T Dupree and unveiled on July 8th 1903 by Lady Dupree'. A stone base inscription states, 'These stones were laid 19th December 1972 to mark the building of the Civic Offices and Guildhall Square'.
