Description

Ellie Jays is a group of three houses located on Guildhall Walk in Portsmouth, dating from the early to mid 19th century. Originally, No.8 was known as the Nine Elms Public House and No.6 as the Waterloo Inn. These buildings have been converted into a restaurant and bar with flats above. The exterior is stuccoed with a concealed roof and features three storeys and three bays.

In the centre, No.6 has a recessed two-leaf, four-panelled door with a fanlight, set beneath a wide round arch with an architrave. To the left and right are former public house windows, each with a fanlight under a round arch and a moulded panel apron. Further to the left, No.8 has a round-headed window under a wide round arch, with a panelled apron. There is also a recessed two-panelled door with a glazed upper panel and a fanlight under a round arch, along with a similar round-headed window as seen in No.6.

The doors and windows are flanked by pilasters. No.4, located to the right of No.6, features a two-storey canted tripartite bay on the ground and first floors, each with a central sash window and narrow flanking sashes, divided by pilasters. On the first floor, No.8 has a tripartite window with a central sash and narrow flanking sashes, with vermiculated panels above each light and an open segmental pediment on console brackets. No.6 has a four-pane sash window with a cornice and console brackets.

On the second floor, No.4 has a sash window set under a cambered arch, with a moulded string course above and a keystone. The coped parapet features a scrolled pediment at the centre, which reads 'The Nine Elms'. No.6 has a four-pane sash window with an eaved architrave, a band cornice, and a coped parapet, while No.8 has a similar sash window without glazing bars, a band cornice, and a balustrade. The interior has not been inspected.
