Description

The garden wall on the east side of the grounds of Old Chantry Court is an 18th-century structure with several builds and later alterations. It is made of red brick in an irregular Flemish bond and is approximately 430mm thick, rising 39 courses above ground level to a bullnosed coping brick course. The wall steps down twice to the south and has an offset on the east side. The north end also consists of 39 courses, with the coping remade featuring a tile drip and a brick soldier course. The wall extends from the rear of number 79, turning northeast for about 10 meters before continuing southeast for approximately 33 meters alongside the United Reformed Church Hall, ending with a short return at the south end. Historically, the gardens of the former Vicarage were likely established in the early 18th century and were described as "the extensive gardens of the Old Vicarage" (now Old Chantry House). They were noted for being a very neat kitchen and pleasure garden, walled around and planted with various fruit trees, evergreens, shrubs, ornamental trees, and flowers, along with a complete raised brick summer house and a temple of ease within the garden.
