Description
The Church of St. Peter is a parish church located in Tyringham with Filgrave. The lower part of the tower dates back to the 12th century, while the upper part and the west window were added in the early 16th century. The church was rebuilt in 1871 by E.J. Tarver using rockfaced stone and features slate roofs. It consists of a nave and an apsidal chancel, along with a south chapel and vestry, and a north porch. The gabled vestry door is adorned with pinnacles and is marked with the date 1871. The windows are designed with plate tracery.
Inside, there is a round-headed tower arch and elaborately carved capitals and corbels from 1871. The chancel is vaulted and features painted decoration and small stained glass windows in the apse. The south chapel contains two wall-mounted brasses: one commemorates a late 15th-century knight in armor with the arms of Tyringham, and the other honors Mary, daughter of John Tyringham and wife of Anthony Catesby, who died in 1508. Additionally, there are white marble monuments to the Praed family, created by William Behnes, including one for William Praed, a Member of Parliament who died in 1833, featuring relief carving of a lock and barge on the Grand Junction Canal, which he helped legislate.
