Description
Country house, now subdivided into dwelling units. The building dates back to the 16th century and has undergone alterations. It is constructed with a dressed stone base and brick with flush-bonded stone quoins, moulded stone strings over windows, stone coped gable ends with kneelers, and ball finials on the apex. The roof is of old tile, and the chimneys have rectangular bases with stone quoins and diagonal brick shafts with offset heads. The house is two storeys and has an attic. The south front is in an 'E' shape, with projecting gabled wings and a central projecting gabled full-height porch. A 18th century moulded and bracketed wood eaves cornice runs between the outer wings and the porch, as well as along the inner faces of the wings. The porch has a four-centred arched stone opening with moulded spandrels on the ground floor. There are stone mullioned and transomed windows on the ground and first floors, with mullioned windows in the gabled attics. To the left of the porch is one bay of blocked single lights. Between the wings and the porch are tall gabled attic windows, also present on the sides of the wings. Original or restored mullions and transoms are fitted with 19th century metal lights, with ogee arched glazing in the top panes. The building is flanked by archways with ogee-gabled heads and obelisks, all rendered. A north-east wing was added around 1907 by H. Tanner Jr., in a similar style. Inside, the hall and dining room contain 17th century panelling. The hall has a 16th-17th century carved overmantel, and the dining room has a fireplace dated 1686 with a Jacobean overmantel.
