Description

Dated 1819, the Ann Hopkins Smith Almshouses comprise a row of twelve dwellings. The building is constructed of red brick with a decorative chequered pattern created by black headers. The roof is slate, with deep eaves supported by brackets. Brick chimney stacks are present. The almshouses are two storeys high, with thirteen bays, and a central three-bay section which projects forward and is topped by a triangular pediment containing a segmental brick arch and a plaque inscribed with the date. The ground floor features a large arch with an elliptical head and a tunnel vault. The front elevation has alternating pairs of doors and windows, all topped with rusticated stone flat arches and raised keystones. Each almshouses has a six-panel door and sash windows—four panes wide and four deep on the ground floor, and four panes wide and three deep on the first floor. The original brick boundary wall runs along the street, featuring central gatepiers and an ornamental iron gate.
