Description
Downend Cottage is a cottage dating from the early 17th century, with a right-hand bay that is a 18th-century brewhouse. It was altered and restored in the early 20th century. The building is constructed of Isle of Wight stone rubble and features a thatched roof with an off-central brick chimneystack. It is a three-bay lobby entrance house with one storey and attics, and it has four windows. There are four eyebrow dormers and modern casements beneath dripstones. Opposite the chimneystacks is an early 17th-century former doorway, now blocked, which has an obtusely pointed arch. To the right, there is a stone gabled porch with kneelers and a doorcase. The south gable is topped with stone coping and kneelers, and it has two 17th-century mullioned windows with dripstones above. Inside, the lounge features a stone fireplace with brick beehive-shaped chamfers and lamb's tongue stops, along with exposed square framing. The former parlour contains a four-centred arched stone fireplace. The spine beam has four-inch chamfers and heart-shaped stops, while the main bedroom showcases a four-centred stone arch.
