Description

CHURCH LANE 1. 5270 Northwood Church of St John The Baptist SZ 49 SE 6/31 17.8.51. I 2. C12 and later. Built of stone rubble. Victorian octagonal broached spire with curved tiles. Nave, chancel and north and south aisles. Gabled south porch with flint galleting. Norman south doorway with one order of shafts, zig zag arch and hood moulding with chip carved motifs. Arcades have pointed arches with a slight chamfer circa 1200. Mid C17 wooden pulpit. Three tablets of cartouche type, 1761, 1689 and 1798. The churchyard contains some C18 headstones with cherub motif, 2 table tombs and several early C19 chest tombs.
