Description
The Church of St John the Baptist is a Grade I listed building located on Church Lane in Northwood. It dates from the 12th century and features stone rubble construction. The church has a Victorian octagonal broached spire covered with curved tiles, and includes a nave, chancel, and north and south aisles. The gabled south porch is adorned with flint galleting. Notably, the Norman south doorway has one order of shafts, a zigzag arch, and a hood moulding with chip carved motifs. The arcades display pointed arches with a slight chamfer, dating from around 1200. Inside, there is a mid-17th century wooden pulpit and three cartouche-type tablets from 1761, 1689, and 1798. The churchyard features some 18th-century headstones with cherub motifs, two table tombs, and several early 19th-century chest tombs.
