Description

The 19th-century limekilns at Alum Bay Old Road are beehive-shaped structures. The lower sections are made of stone rubble, while the upper domed parts are constructed of cement. Each kiln features round-headed brick entrances that have been cemented over, and the doors are missing. The height of the doors is approximately 2 feet 6 inches, and the domes rise to about 8 feet. Although there is some uncertainty regarding the original use of these buildings, their location suggests that they were likely used as limekilns rather than icehouses.
