Description
Tennyson's Beacon is a commemorative cross located in Totland, erected in the early 20th century. It is a massive granite Celtic cross featuring incised decoration, a moulded plinth, and an iron railed enclosure. This cross was established in memory of Alfred Lord Tennyson at the highest point of one of his regular walks from his home, Farringford, where he lived from 1853 until his death in 1892. The inscription on one side reads: "In memory of Alfred Lord Tennyson this Cross is raised as a beacon to sailors by the people of Freshwater and other friends in England and America." The opposite side bears the inscription: "Tennyson. Born August 6 1809. Died October 6 1892."
