Description

Castle House is a villa built around 1830 to 1840, featuring castellated additions. It is set back from the road in its own grounds, with the main front facing west. The building has two storeys and a semi-basement, faced with stone that imitates brickwork. The front has five windows, with the northern bay forming a wing at right angles to the main block, separated by a coursed rubble crenellated tower that includes machicolation and a glacis at the base.

The main block has a slightly projecting central bay with rusticated quoins at the corners. It features a low-pitched hipped slate roof with bracketed projecting eaves. On either side of the main block, there are superimposed bays at the ground floor and basement, each with three casement lights on the ground floor, a concave cornice, and a hipped slate roof above. The basement has one sash window at the front of each bay, with glazing bars and block sills. The first-floor windows are recessed sashes, lacking glazing bars except for those on the wing, and have block sills. The main block also has trellising on the first floor.

The central doorway is set in a flat-arched recess with curved corners, flanked by sidelights beside a recessed door with four moulded panels. In front, there is a cantilevered verandah with a tent roof, featuring cast iron tracery and scroll-patterned pilasters and brackets. A flight of cast iron steps flares at the base and has turned iron balusters.

On the south front, the castellated style is prominently displayed, with two towers flanking a crenellated bay that has corners returned on a curve to the wall, all constructed of stone rubble with a glacis at the foot. This elevation has three storeys and three windows, with the second-floor windows being recessed sashes, some retaining glazing bars, and rusticated ashlar surrounds with keystones and consoles supporting the block sills. The first floor features central French windows, with side windows on curves similar to the second floor but with recessed panels below. The ground floor mirrors the first floor but lacks keystones.
