Description

PRIORY ROAD, ST HELEN'S 1. 1577 Church of St Helen SZ 68 NW 10/113 24.10.50.

B 2. 1717 but rebuilt 1829. The chancel added in 1862. The crenellated west tower, which has affinities with St Thomas' Church, St Thomas' Street Ryde. Stone rubble and casticated brick quoins. Pointed windows, Y tracery in wood. Transepts but no aides. Memorial tablet to Edward Grose died 1815: inscription flanked by bundled trophies by W Pistall, New Road, London. Tablet to Sir Nash Grose died 1814 similar with lictor's fasces flanking inscription; unsigned in this case.
