Description
The Church of St Peter is a parish church built in 1852, designed by the notable local architect Thomas Hellyer from Ryde. It features rubble construction with ashlar dressings and has steeply pitched red tile roofs, with every fifth course being curved and decorative ridge tiles.
The exterior includes a nave with a lower chancel and no aisles, but it has an integral vestry to the north. There is a south porch with moulded architraves and engaged colonettes, along with a western bellcote. The east side has tripartite lancets under hood moulds, while the other elevations feature slender lancets and corner stepped buttresses.
Inside, the nave boasts a scissor rafter roof and a pointed chancel arch. There is an open chancel screen that originally displayed coloured rood figures. The reredos, described in 1969 as 'towering' with painted panels, is not as prominent in photographs from 2005. The organ is believed to date from the late 17th century, and the lancets contain coloured and figurative glass.
This charming church, designed in an Early English style, is a well-preserved example of Hellyer's work and serves as a focal point for the small community of Havenstreet.
