Description

The monument on Afton Down, built around 1846, is a stone obelisk approximately 4 feet high dedicated to E.L.M. It is inscribed with a memorial message: "Erected in remembrance of a most dear and only child who was suddenly removed into eternity by a fall from the adjacent cliff on the rocks beneath 28th August 1846." Each face of the obelisk features a different biblical text, including: "Reader prepare to meet thy doom for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth," "Jesus said I am the resurrection and the life," "In the midst of life we are in death," and "He cometh forth like a flower and is cast down. He fleeth also as a shadow and continueth not."
