Description
This is a terrace of four dwellings, built around 1860, and now incorporating a hotel. The buildings are constructed with a brick core, rendered on the exterior and sit within a classical style. They stand four storeys high, with a basement level, and are arranged in three-window units. The front facade curves to meet adjacent buildings, forming a curve at the junction of St Aubyns Gardens and the west-facing terrace of St Aubyns. The sash windows lack glazing bars on most floors, except for the third floor where some single vertical glazing bars remain. The roof has a shallow pitch, with red concrete tiles covered by a parapet. A pierced parapet tops the building, and pilasters are present on the third floor, resting on a heavy moulded cornice. Giant Corinthian pilasters connect the first and second floors. First-floor windows have moulded surrounds with balustraded balconies, while the central window of each unit is distinguished by a pediment. The ground floor is rusticated, with round-arched windows featuring ornamental keystones. Flat-roofed Doric porches, featuring balustraded parapets and balustrading returned between shafts and the elevation, provide access via a flight of five steps, with a flying arch to the basement area. The entrance to No. 6 has been blocked with a sash window. The terrace is further defined by rendered, rusticated brick piers with pyramid caps and cast iron panels, set within a dwarf wall.
