Description

Numbers 1-13 Norfolk Terrace are a group of mid-19th century terraced houses. The houses are constructed of stucco with slate and tile roofs where visible. Numbers 1-6 are three storeys over a basement with dormers; the remaining houses are four storeys high. The houses have varying window arrangements; numbers 1 has two windows, numbers 8 has five, and numbers 7-9 form a distinctive centrepiece.

Numbers 7-9 feature flat-arched porches with pilasters and entablatures, though the pilaster details are lost on number 8. These porches include recessed entrances with overlights, and number 9 has original double doors with engraved glass. The ground floor has triple round-arched windows with sill brackets and panelled pilasters, while the windows on the first floor are generally round-arched with architraves. Number 8 has a prominent central two-light window with round-arched glazing and a Vitruvian scroll to the spandrel, complemented by a moulded architrave. The second and third floor windows are generally flat-arched with moulded stucco architraves. Further details include a bracketed cornice, a blocking course, and stacks to party walls.

Numbers 1-6 and 10-13 have flat-arched porches with pilasters and entablatures, except number 13, which has an elaborate round-arched porch with a vermiculated keystone. These porches also feature recessed entrances with overlights, with number 10 retaining original double doors. The ground-floor windows are flat-arched with consoles to the sills and moulded stucco architraves; numbers 3 and 5 have cast-iron window guards. The first-floor windows above the entrances are round-arched with bracketed sills, while the other first-floor windows are flat-arched with sills stepped forward. Subsequent floors continue the stucco architrave detailing, with segmental-arched windows on the second floor of numbers 2-6. Numbers 1-6 have dormers in a mansard roof. Number 1 has a two-storey wing projecting to Temple Gardens, incorporating quoins to the first floor, a modillion cornice, and a hipped roof.

The interior of the houses has not been inspected. Balustrades with vase balusters are present to the steps and area, to all houses except number 1 and the area of numbers 2 and 3.
