Description

Numbers 58-65 and their attached railings are a group of terraced houses dating from around 1850. They are constructed of stucco with a slate roof.

The houses are four storeys high with a basement and feature dormers. Each house has a three-window range, with full-height, segmental bays and paired porches. The ground floor is decorated with banded rustication. The porches have flat arches with pilasters and wreathed entablatures, though the wreaths are missing from numbers 60 and 61. The doorcases have overlights and panelled doors, the original studded design, which are now glazed on numbers 58 and 62. All windows are flat-arched and have moulded stucco architraves on the first to third floors. First-floor windows have a pediment over the inner window and cornices to the outer. There is a bracketed balcony with a bowed cast-iron balustrade. A storey band runs above the second-floor windows. The windows on the second and third floors of numbers 58-60 and 63, and only the third floor of numbers 61-62, have original 6/6 and 3/6 sash windows. A plaque in memory of Frederick William Robertson is located on number 60. The building features a dentil cornice and blocking course, dormers in a mansard roof, and stacks to the party walls. The area railings are cast iron with spear-and-tassel finials and console brackets. The return to number 58 in Montpelier Place has architraves to all windows on the first to third floors. All windows on this return are blank, apart from two on the ground floor and one on the second floor. The interior was not inspected.
