Description

Numbers 70-74 are a group of terraced houses dating from around 1840. They are constructed of stucco with the roofs hidden behind a parapet. The houses are four storeys high with a basement, and each has a three-window front. The facades are characterised by full-height, almost full-width, segmental bays. The ground floor is decorated with banded rustication, and features flat-arched entrances with pilasters and an entablature to numbers 70-72, topped with an overlight. All windows are flat-arched; the first, second, and third-floor windows have architraves, except for the central fourth-floor windows of numbers 73 and 74. Balconies are present on the first floor, with cast-iron railings that are continuous to numbers 70-72, and individual to numbers 73-74. A storey band separates the first and second floors, and a dentil cornice runs between the second and third floors, topped by a secondary cornice and blocking course. Stacks are located within the party walls. The return facade of number 70, facing Victoria Road, is four windows wide, all architraved and blank, except where modern windows have been installed. The interior of the properties was not inspected. The cast-iron railings to the steps and areas are largely original, although some are missing or have been replaced.
