Description

These are two early 19th-century terraced houses on the south side of Upper North Street, Brighton. They are constructed of stucco, with the roof hidden behind a parapet. The houses are two storeys and have a two-window frontage. A central flat-arched entrance is topped with an overlight. All the windows are flat-arched; originally, there was one window to either side of the entrance. The window on the left side of number 43 remains in its original form. The window to the right of number 43 has been replaced by a shop window, while the window in number 42 has been altered in a Tudor style. A string course supports four fluted Ionic columns which frame the windows and create a blank central bay above each entrance. The windows have a cornice supported by consoles, but this feature is missing from number 43. Number 43 retains original sash windows on the ground floor to the left and the first floor. The entablature stops short of the full frontage, surmounted by a stepped parapet. The interior of the properties was not inspected during the listing process.
