Description
The Flint Walls at St Mary's Hall School are located along Eastern Road in Brighton and date back to around 1836, although parts may be older. These walls enclose a large rectangular area and flank the entrance drive, with additional return walls at both ends.
Constructed from cobblestone and flint with pebble mortar, the walls feature red-brown brick dressings. They stand between 2 to 3 meters high and include brick bands, piers, and surrounds for openings. The section of walling in front of the school is possibly older and has raised panels with brick edges. This area transitions into lower garden retaining walls, with the right wall sloping and the left wall featuring an offset top with vertical brick strips that elevate the flint. It also includes sections of balustrade with triangular-headed openings.
The remaining walling along Eastern Road has quoined pilasters that project inward, topped with brick caps. Some sections have a plinth and brick coping, along with various blocked and inserted openings. At the western end, the walls are truncated but still flank the entrance drive opposite Chichester Place, with the left wall truncated but preserved further north where it returns westward.
