Description
The Water Turbine House at Chingford Mill Pumping Station was built in 1891 to accommodate two turbine engines placed side by side. The structure features a brick plinth in Flemish bond, with brick and concrete used for the sluice. Above this, there is box framing with painted render infill panels and decorative framing on the gable ends. The roof is tiled with swept eaves and exposed rafter ends, and there are barge boards on the gable ends. The building has flat arched, two and three-light casement windows. The gable end facing the sluice gate has machinery from the early 20th century that oversails and is supported by wooden brackets. A low utility shed facing the pumping station was added in the late 20th century and is not included in the listing. The Water Turbine House forms a group with the Pumping Station located to the southwest.
