Description
The Church of St Michael and All Angels is a church built in 1885 by J M Bignall. It is constructed of yellow brick with red dressings and features a steeply pitched tiled roof. This tall town church is designed in the Geometrical Gothic style, consisting of a continuous six-bay nave and chancel, with lean-to aisles that create a cliff-like appearance at the east end. The aisles have lancet windows, while the two pairs of clerestory dormers display plate tracery. The east window is a three-light design with intersecting tracery. Inside, the church has an imposing atmosphere, with some stone dressings and arcades supported by clustered piers. The complex timber roof is of king post construction and coved to the springing. Notable furnishings include a reredos and pulpit adorned with carved figures by Zwincke, a wrought iron altar rail, and stained glass by Hardman. It is worth noting that the projected tower and spire were never built.
